Self-Hosted Index

About this index

How this index is built, where its data comes from, and how its labels and pairings are decided.

What this is

The Self-Hosted Index is a directory of software you run yourself: on your own hardware, or on a server you control, instead of renting it from a hosted service. It files 1,357 applications in 84 categories. Wherever a listing takes the place of a hosted product, the listing names that product, and each of the 258 hosted products in the index has a page of its own collecting its replacements.

Where the data comes from

Every listing is compiled from the awesome-selfhosted dataset, a catalogue maintained by the awesome-selfhosted contributors and published under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported Licence (CC BY-SA 3.0). Names, descriptions, licences, platforms and repository figures are quoted from that dataset rather than rewritten here. This index is published under the same licence, and the attribution appears in the footer of every page.

How health labels are decided

A health label comes only from the repository activity date in the dataset. Active means the repository recorded activity within the twelve months before the build date. Quiet means the last recorded activity is older than that. No activity date recorded means the dataset carries no date for the project. Nothing else feeds the label: not star counts, not opinion, and not payment.

How pairings are chosen

A replacement pairing is listed only when it can be verified. Either the project’s own site or documentation presents it as an alternative to the hosted product, or the pairing is settled usage in the self-hosting community and can be pointed to. Nobody can pay for a pairing, a listing, or a position in a ranking. Some hosted products honestly have a single known replacement; those lists stay short rather than get padded with weaker matches.

How current this is

The index is regenerated from the dataset at each build. This build is dated 31 October 2026, and the date appears in the footer of every page. Star counts, release tags and activity dates are the dataset’s figures as of that build, and they age until the next one.

Listings are not endorsements

A listing records that a project exists and what the dataset says about it. It is not a recommendation, a security review, or a promise that the software is maintained, safe, or fit for your data. Listed projects are not affiliated with this index, and their presence here is not their endorsement of it either. Read a project’s own site and repository before you trust it with anything that matters.
